Kleines Typenverzeichnis der europäischen Zauber- und Novellenmärchen [Concise Type Index of European Magic Tales and Fairy Tales in Novella Form]. Diether Röth for the Märchenstiftung Walter Kahn. Type and motif indexes are basic tools for research on folk tales. They bring together variations in the tales across cultures and time, allowing comparative studies. The Verzeichnis der Märchentypen by Antti Aarne (1910), later translated into English and enlarged by Stith Thompson, became the international "Bible" of fairy tale research, but a regional index for the German-speaking regions has been lacking. Concentrating on magic tales and fairy tales in novella form, Röth examines the variants of about 200 German-language fairy tales with impressive thoroughness. Using 95 anthologies with 6,000 texts, Röth's Typenverzeichnis is a regional index that captures every motif variation, altering Thompson's classifications in a number of cases. The key word index is exemplary in the way it facilitates access to complicated material. This is a first-rate reference book. How did we ever get along without it? [wh/mrh]
