Kulturbeziehungen zwischen Japan und dem Westen seit 1853: eine annotierte Bibliographie [Cultural Relations Between Japan and the West Since 1853: An Annotated Bibliography]. Ed. Irmela Hijiya-Kirschnereit. München: Iudicium-Verlag, 1999. xxiv, 1,164 p. 23 cm. (Bibliographische Arbeiten aus dem Deutschen Institut für Japanstudien der Philipp-Franz-von-Siebold-Stiftung, 6). ISBN 3-89129-398-4: DM 240.00 [01-1-144]

This bibliography resulted from a project about "Occidentalism as a tradition in modern Japan" by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. Another bibliography in the same series was discussed in RREA 5:228. The work includes 1,663 numbered entries, all with sometimes extensive, signed annotations. Listed are non-fictional scholarly and popular monographs and journal articles in German, English, and French covering cultural contacts between Japan and the western world, in the traditional sense of culture including language, literature, the arts, philosophy, religion, popular culture, and the history of science. The sources include all important bibliographies and periodicals in the field. Given the high cost of some non-annotated title compilations, this outstanding, well-organized work is a bargain and is recommended for all larger research libraries. [sh/hsb]

Batavia-Jakarta 1600-2000: A bibliography. Ed. Ewald Ebing and Youetta de Jager. Asst. James ter Beek. Leiden: KITLV Press, 2000. xxix, 1,018 p. 25 cm. (Bibliographical Series, 23). ISBN 90-6718-172-2: EUR 68.00 [01-2-454]

This volume of the Bibliographical Series of the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde [Royal Institute for Language, Country, and Population Studies] is comparable both in quality and organization to earlier volumes that received positive reviews: Annotated Bibliography of Bibliographies on Indonesia (see IFB 93-1/2-079) and Bibliographies on Southeast Asia (see RREA 5:229). Based on the holdings of the library of the KITLV and other libraries, as well as on published bibliographies, this bibliography lists over 5,000 works in Indonesian, Dutch, English, French, and German, arranged chronologically within 40 subject or format categories. Indexes by English subject heading (based on the thesaurus of the KITLV), author, and title complete the work. [sh/ab]
