Modedesigner: ein Lexikon von Armani bis Yamamoto [Fashion Designers: An Encyclopedia from Armani to Yamamoto]. Ingrid Loschek. 2d expanded ed. München: Beck, 2002. 226 p. ill. 19 cm. (Beck’sche Reihe, 1249). ISBN 3-406-47642-2: EUR 14.90 [02-1-089]
Although the number of pages in this work has not changed vis-à-vis the 1998 edition, a slightly larger format has allowed the accommodation of articles for eight new designers and firms: Boss, Burberry, Hessein Chalayan, Alberta Feretti, Isabel Toledo, Viktor & Rolf, Vuitton, and Bernhard Wilhelm. Some of these, such as Boss, are not “recent newcomers,” and should have been included in the first edition. The biographies of designers have been updated “with the help of the couture houses,” but the generally knowledgeable descriptions of their fashions stem from the author. The work also includes articles and photos from other sources, such as newspapers. Bibliographical references are given only sporadically, and are embedded in the text; a compilation of important publications on the topic is lacking. The index includes names and firms mentioned in the articles. This is an up-to-date reference work aimed at a broader public, but also appropriate for academic libraries. [sh/nb]
