Unlike the previous editions (see RREA 6:79 for a review of the 2d edition), which considered the post-World War II period as contemporary, the 3d edition of Philosophie der Gegenwart in Einzeldarstellungen now includes coverage only of philosophers whose main works first appeared or who became influential after 1970. Fifteen of the 116 articles are new; the others have been checked and brought up-to-date. Twenty-nine of the 55 articles omitted from this 3d edition have been reassigned to Klassiker der Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts, which also contains five new articles on philosophers not included in any of the three editions of Philosophie der Gegenwart in Einzeldarstellungen (Cassirer, Dewey, Husserl, Schlick, Strauss).

Such a selection as is here on offer can be debated to a greater or lesser degree. According to the preface, there is a disproportionate emphasis on German and Anglo-American philosophers, because the lexicon is aimed at German language readers. Well-known philosophers appear along with some known only within the field and several whose status as philosopher is at least questionable (Isaiah Berlin).

Overall, one can say that all essential trends of contemporary philosophy are covered, especially the analytic tradition. Each article includes biographical data followed by a presentation of main themes and their reception. The quite extensive bibliographies have been updated to 2007. [tk/rc]

The first three volumes of this work all carry the title Ausbreitung und Wirkung des Nietzscheschen Werkes im deutschen Sprachraum [Dissemination and Influence of Nietzsche’s Work in the German-Speaking Areas], and cover 1867-1900 (the year of Nietzsche’s death), 1901-1918, and 1919-1945 respectively (see RREA 6:90). Volume 1 originally appeared in 1974 (number 3 in the series) and volume 2 in 1983 (number 9 in the series). They appeared in 1998 as second, revised and expanded editions, along with the 1st edition of volume 3 (number 40 in the series).

This fourth volume of the Nietzsche bibliography consists mainly of corrections or additions to the previous three volumes. The name index is divided into two sections: “… and Nietzsche” and “Nietzsche and …” A subject index is lacking. Although the volume combines the indexes from all four volumes into one, its “user friendliness” leaves something to be desired. [fsr/ldl]
