The compilers declare this volume appropriate for serious scholarly use, and certainly there is a need for a reference work on this topic. (The excellent History of Women Philosophers--three volumes to date--does not yet extend into the twentieth century.) Unfortunately the 180 bio-bibliographical entries on women philosophers of all eras and world regions are often lacking in focus and balance, mixing the anecdotal with the truly substantial, rendering the book of value chiefly for beginning students and laypeople.
