This review is presented as part of an historical survey of the development of Protestant and Catholic encyclopedias since Wetzer's and Welte's Kirchenlexikon of 1846-1856 to the present. Reflecting an overall trend, LThK3 presents trans-confessional information, deemphasizing confessional differences and eschewing the sometimes moralizing terminology of LThK2 for a more objective tone. Compared with other encyclopedias, LThK3 covers a broader range of topics, per necessity in highly compressed form. LThK3 includes people and events through ca. 1989, treats modern social problems in greater detail and reflects a broader range of non-theological disciplines than LThK2. [ar/ab]

This guide to theological bibliography gives special attention to non-university theological libraries and contains chapters on access to library catalogs, theological information sources, research strategies, documentation, and a glossary of technical terms and commonly used abbreviations. Author/title and subject indexes are included. Although generally a great improvement over previous editions, the guide is disappointing in its neglect of electronic resources. Not a bibliography, but a reproduction of the catalog of the library of the Center for the Research of Antisemitism of the Technical University of Berlin, volumes 1-3 of this work contain the title records, both main and added entries, for monographs, brochures, monographic series, and some periodicals. Vol. 4 contains a somewhat deficient subject index. The catalog contains mainly German-language materials published since 1879, so those seeking material in other languages or non-monographic literature must rely on other sources. An alternative is the biennial bibliography, Antisemitism: An Annotated Bibliography (New York: Garland, 1987- ). [ah/ab]
