HELECON serves students of economics as one of the largest bibliographical databases. With coverage starting reliably from 1980, it includes five large European databases: ECONIS (Germany); FONDS QUETELET (Belgium); NCOM (Denmark); IMA (Finland); SCANP (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland); and SCIMP (Western Europe in general and North America). Two installments are prepared each year. Although this bibliographic index is very comprehensive and serves a variety of uses, given the large number of titles in the Scandinavian languages, the question remains as to how relevant its comprehensiveness is to the average researcher. But the average user will not find its language inclusiveness all that worthwhile. The sources of information across the entire database are very rich indeed, but its subscription costs must be weighed against the online use of similar resources. [csz/tk]

"Gabler," as this dictionary is known, is--with its 3945 pages--the largest German economics dictionary available. The hardback edition offers approx. 25,000 entries and cross-references in four volumes, including 140 articles that provide overviews of important topics such as agricultural politics, banking and marketing. Gabler is updated frequently -- twelve times between 1956 and 1992 -- and is thus very up-to-date. If there is something to criticize, it is the large number of unnecessary legal terms. [lf/sl]

Including approximately 16,000 entries on 2471 pages, Vahlen was first published in 1987. Unlike Gabler, it is strictly limited to terms in economics and thus seems more consistent. As with Gabler, many of the articles are written by well-known economists. It also compares favorably with Gabler in terms of its cross-references and its currency. The articles include copious bibliographical references. [lf/sl]

With only 3,600 entries, this dictionary is considerably less extensive than the previous two, although it is very up-to-date. The emphasis is on political economics. [lf/sl]

Includes approximately 2,100 entries focusing on areas of economics associated with computer technology, statistics, mathematics and law. [lf/sl]

The HdWW is the successor to the famous Handwörterbuch der Sozialwissenschaften (published 1952-1965), which in turn was based on the fourth edition of the Handwörterbuch der Sozialwissenschaften (published 1923-1929). Its distinguishing feature is that it is not a list of keywords, but a collection of approximately 600 long, alphabetically arranged essays on the major topics of economics. The advantage of the HdWW is that it doesn't treat topics in isolation, but rather in their larger context. Thanks to the detailed subject index, one can find specific information with precision. Contributors are well known, and each article ends with an extensive bibliography. This work gives a very comprehensive and sound, if not always quite up-to-date overview of the field of economics.
