Following a sixfold subdivided subject scheme, the text for which alone requires six pages, this retrospective bibliography lists 4119 titles. The actual number of entries is considerably higher than the total number of titles, however, due to the frequent use of repeated entries. Although the subject scheme, which serves as a table of contents, lacks page numbers, it and the place and name index provide the only means of access for the user. The subject bibliography covers publications from ca. 1620 on, but for descriptive and interpretive issues the time period covered is restricted to 1732-1985. Literature from this time period can be found in Karol Estreicher's Bibliografia polska (through the 19th century) and Bibliografia bibliografii i nauki o ksiazce and its successors (from 1937 on), from which Das polnische Buchwesen draws a selection, though its early cutoff date of 1985 gives Das polnische Buchwesen itself almost historical value. Also questionable is the exclusion of non-Polish authors of works about Polish bibliography, even when such works were published in Poland. Because the notable absence of annotations is not likely to make the results of Polish bibliographical research internationally known, no false expectations of this bibliography being published in Polish have been raised; thanks to an appended Polish translation of the subject scheme, however, the bibliography will still find its Polish audience.
