In April of 1996, the Basel University Library Press announced that the Jahresverzeichnis der schweizerischen Hochschulschriften--rich in tradition, having begun in 1898--had ceased publication with its 94th volume (published in 1994), covering the year 1991. At the same time, it was pointed out that the Swiss dissertations are searchable via "Helveticat," the online catalog of the Schweizerische Landesbibliothek (Swiss National Library), through the homepage of the Swiss National Library at http://www.snl.ch. The question presents itself: How necessary will the Jahresverzeichnis be for retrospective searching, given the parallel entries between it and Das Schweizer Buch for a number of years, given the availability of the 1700-1910 and 1911-1965 runs of Gesamtverzeichnis des deutschsprachigen Schrifttums (Union Catalog of German-Language Publications) and of Gesamtverzeichnis deutschsprachiger Hochschulschriften (Union Catalog of German-Language Dissertations) for 1961-1980, and given the online searching capabilities of "Helveticat"? "Helveticat" fell short in trial searches only in older dissertations (around 1900) for the areas of medicine, technology, and the natural sciences. Given other alternatives, it does not appear that even the back issues of the Jahresverzeichnis need to be kept among the reference materials. "Helveticat" offers the best alternative with nearly seamless coverage of the time periods as well as the speed and advantages of an online catalog search. A CD-ROM version based on the Swiss National Library's electronic data would certainly be conceivable. [sah/rdh]
