DA-96-1 -- History (General)

96-1-089

World guide: Facts, Figures, Maps, Opinions. CD-ROM edition, Windows, Macintosh. Uppsala: Interactive Media Group, Uppsala University. (IDC, Postbus 11205, NL-2301 EE Leiden)

1995 ed. 1 CD-ROM + User manual. Hfl. 350.00

Although the publishers have modified the title, this CD-ROM is very closely based on the printed Third World Guide: The World As Seen by the Third World, from which its texual material comes (in addition to the annual reports from Amnesty International). It uses a Windows interface, is user-friendly and available in English, Spanish, German, French, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish and Icelandic. Although it presents a good deal of factual and statistical information country by country as well as comparatively, with numerous options for searching and presenting data (i.e., graphically), it is not always acccurate and is often not as up-to-date as the current regional handbooks published by Europa Publications. Kleines Lexikon der Antike: umfassend die griechisch-römische Welt von ihren Anfängen bis zum Beginn des Mittelalters (6. Jahrhundert n. Chr.) [Concise Dictionary of the Classical Antiquity: The Graeco-Roman World from its Beginnings to the Start of the Middle Ages (6th century A.D.)]. Otto Hiltbrunner. 6th completely rev. ed. Tübingen: Francke, 1995. xvi, 654 p. 19 cm. (Sammlung Dalp) ISBN 3-7720-1036-9: DM 48.00

The new editions of these two dictionaries of antinquity appeared almost simultaneously in 1995. Wörterbuch der Antike covers classical Greece and Rome as well as Near Eastern and Germanic cultures up to the beginning of the Middle Ages. It attempts to render antiquity transparent to the contemporary reader by making connections between the present and the past. Its 3000 entries are meant to be read as much as consulted. By contrast, Kleines Lexikon der Antike takes a historicist approach, looking at antiquity more from the perspective of its own time. These two works complement each other well: the Wörterbuch answers unconventional questions, the Kleines Lexikon takes a more scholarly approach. [jm/al]

Alte Geschichte in Studium und Unterricht: eine Einführung mit kommentiertem Literaturverzeichnis [Ancient History for Teachers and Students: An Introduction with an Annotated Bibliography]. Dankward Vollmer. Stuttgart: Steiner, 1994. 205 p. 23 cm. ISBN 3-515-06468-0: DM 28.00

This annotated bibliography on ancient history is intended primarily for teachers and those studying to be teachers. The references are for the most part to German works, with a small number of English titles. It is difficult to recommend, unless for a quick bibliographical overview: in addition to problems of organization, the selection of titles does not always do justice to the field, and some of the opinions and evaluations are questionable.
