Periodica aus Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: Bestandsverzeichnis der Landesbibliothek Mecklenburg-Vorpommern [Periodicals from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: Catalog of the State Library of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern]. Ed. Grete Grewolls. Schwerin: Landesbibliothek Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 1996. 221 p. ill. 29 cm. ISBN 3-86062-020-7: DM 18.00. (Landesbibliothek ..., Am Dom 2, D-19055 Schwerin, Fax [49 385] 558-4424)

The main target group of this catalog of periodical holdings at the state library of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are local historians. Using a very broad definition of "periodical," which includes items such as telephone books, address books, etc., this tool lists a total of 1,663 titles available at the library. Indexes for place names and corporate authors are included, although there is unfortunately no subject index. Recent conversions of certain newspapers into microfilm are not noted, nor is there any mention of various earlier periodical listings elsewhere in the region, both of which would have been a great service to the local historian. Dictionarul presei literare românesti, 1790-1990 [Dictionary of the Romanian Literary Press, 1790-1990]. I. Hangiu. 2d rev. and enlarged ed. Bucuresti: Editura Fundatiei Culturale Române, 1996. xv, 674 p. ill. 25 cm. ISBN 973-577-050-4: DM 145.00 (Kubon & Sagner, München)

Like its predecessor published in 1987, and notwithstanding the word "dictionary" in the title, the work under review is, in fact, an alphabetically arranged bibliography of Romanian literary periodicals. The entries for individual titles contain detailed annotations, including title changes, a brief description, publication history, lists of main contributors, holding libraries, etc. The main listing covers 2,055 periodicals; post-1989 journals are listed in a separate section, as are periodical bibliographies and secondary material on the Romanian press. This publication can be considered a further milestone in the impressive series of bibliographies that will ultimately provide complete retrospective bibliographic control of the Romanian press. Bern: Schweizerische Landesbibliothek, VZ-Redaktion. 30 cm. ISSN 1012-8387. Former title, through 1981/85 (1986): Schweizerische Nationalbibliographie: Katalog der Schweizerischen Landesbibliothek. 1991-95 (1996). ix, 486 p. + 5 microfiches. SFr. 102.00

The previous edition of this union list of serials in Swiss libraries was published in 1992 and reviewed in detail in IFB 93-3/4-135. This updated edition now contains 8,194 (formerly 5,463) periodical titles, excluding newspapers, arranged in subject groupings and accessible via title and KWIC indexes (the latter on five microfiche that are included with the volume). This information is also available online on national and regional library networks, e.g., through HELVETICAT, the catalog of the Swiss national library. [sh/rs]

Zeitungen aus den Ländern Ostmitteleuropas und der Emigration seit 1945: Beschreibung der Bestände im Pressearchiv des Herder-Instituts [Newspapers from Central Europe Since 1945]. Comp. Reiner Beushausen. Marburg: Herder-Institut, 1997. xi, 329 p. 24 cm. (Sammlungen des Herder-Instituts zur Ostmitteleuropa-Forschung, 3) ISBN 3-87969-251-3: DM 44.00 (Herder-Institut e.V., Gisonenweg 5-7, D-35037 Marburg)

This excellent catalog contains the holdings of Central European (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) and Russian newspapers (post-1945) at the Herder Institute in Marburg. The chapter division reflects this geographical breakdown. Each chapter begins with a short introduction to the history of the regional press followed by a list of sources and a key to abbreviations. The alphabetical title list follows. Entries include German translations of the titles, title changes, frequency, detailed holdings, and more. The 660 titles listed include not only general dailies and weeklies but also some newspaper-like trade journals. Perhaps the only fault of this fine source is its lack of a single, comprehensive index of all included titles. [sh/rs]
