"Es ist viel 'Hitler' in Wagner": Rassismus und antisemitische Deutschtumsideologie in den "Bayreuther Blättern" (1878-1938); mit einem Verfasser- und Schlagwortregister ["There Is Much 'Hitler' in Wagner": Racism and Germanophile Anti-Semitic Ideology in the Bayreuther Blätter (1878-1938); With an Author and Keyword Index]. Annette Hein. Tübingen: Niemeyer, 1996. vii, 551 p. 23 cm. (Conditio Judaica, 13) p. 211-551: Alphabetical and Subject Index for Issues 1 (1878) through 61 (1938). ISBN 3-484-65113-X: DM 198.00
This voluminous work is devoted to the journal Bayreuther Blätter, one of the most influential publications read by the educated --though apolitical--German bourgeoisie in the period between Empire and Third Reich. The textual portion of the work, a dissertation at the Technical College of Aachen, presents the origins and development of the journal and includes details of the staff, readership, circulation, and thematic focus. The study focuses on anti-Semitism and the ideology of Germanness (Deutschtumsideologie) as manifested in the journal. All in all, the author sticks to the topic at hand and does not present an interpretative analysis of the findings. Nor does she discuss the Bayreuther Blätter in the context of other similar journals read by the educated classes. Hein neglects to acknowledge an earlier finding aid, Inhaltsverzeichnis zu den 50 Jahrgängen der "Bayreuther Blätter" 1878-1927, published in 1928, that covers the first fifty years of the journal. The author and subject indexes are structurally difficult to use: Weimar, for example, is found under the term Bayreuth. This reduces the overall usefulness of the work. [fsr/sd]
