When completed, this very important gazetteer will list and locate in fourteen volumes all geographical names from areas that belonged to Germany between 1914 and 1945, but not subsequently, e.g. Silesia, Pomerania, East Prussia, the Sudetenland, Bohemia, Moravia, Alsace. Volumes 1 through 7 have been published so far, with volumes 8 through 12 expected soon. The information in this work is based primarily on maps (1:300,000) collected by the Federal Ministry of the Interior for handling citizenship issues. Other local directories were also used. Place names are listed under their oldest form, followed by later forms, with cross-references from alternative forms to the entry. Border changes are documented in accompanying maps. Supplemental volumes of maps referred to in the text may be ordered for several of the regions. This gazetteer is a significant tool for historians and genealogists, as well as for catalogers seeking to establish place names in their authority work. [wc/mj]
