Cumulating the annual bibliographies of The Urban History Yearbook from 1974 to 1991, this work is intended to make bibliographic research more convenient, not to expand the coverage of the original volumes. The emphasis is heavily British (accounting for 58% of the listed localities), North American (20%), and French (9%). Ca. 20,000 monograph and article titles are grouped into ten categories, including social structure, politics and administration, and attitudes to towns and cities. Each group is arranged by author or title. Detailed place and author indexes facilitate searches. Entries are relatively brief. The lack of a good subject index and miniscule print on crowded pages hinder the easy use of the bibliography- whose very purpose, after all, is ease of use. Although it does not provide satisfactory information for individual cities, it offers useful answers to questions about general and comparative city history (e.g., international migration research, development of urban transportation). Like the previous two editions (1967 and 1978), this bibliography of bibliographies is preceded by a theoretical section that outlines the historical development of German regional bibliography and the issues pertinent to their compilation. Not discussed is the worrisome possibility of their integration into the German online regional catalogs, which threatens their very existence. By adding materials acquired in the last twenty years, and including older bibliographies and other relevant listings, especially bibliographies and catalogs of regional newspapers, the bibliography now lists 515 titles, almost doubled from 261 in the previous edition. Following a short section of general bibliographies, the main entries, most of which are annotated briefly, are arranged alphabetically by region. This work is complete and extremely current, but fails to give the pagination of multi-volume works and, unfortunately, does not list year of publication along with the period of coverage for serial bibliographies. The indexes of persons, titles, selected subjects, and locations cover only the bibliography itself and not the theoretical section. As it cannot be expected that the author will compile a new edition in the next ten years, it is for the "Arbeitsgruppe Regionalbibliographie"-the "Regional Bibliography Task Force"-and others to consider how to carry on this important bibliographical work. With the publication of the second part and the index volume, this bibliography of research in German urban history-its first volume was published in 1986-is now complete. Based on and superseding Erich Keyser's Bibliographie zur Städtegeschichte Deutschlands (1969), it lists ca. 24,000 monographs and articles on general works, north and east German cities (part 1 with 8,600 titles) and south and west German cities (part 2 with 15,400 titles). The quality of the bibliographic entries is outstanding. Commendably, an electronic version of the bibliography is also being compiled at the Institute for Comparative Urban History (Institut für Vergleichende Städtegeschichte) in Münster. The exclusion of foreign research, the lack of miscellanea, the limitation of coverage to only 875 cities and, especially, the lack of timeliness (the coverage periods end in 1984/85) considerably limit the value of this important and generally useful work. This lexicon on the Bavarian city of Bamberg presents a dilemma for the reviewer. On the one hand, it is unfair to replace the author's criteria with one's own. On the other, any reference work should include a complete and balanced presentation of the most important facts, and this is only partially realized in this work. Over 1,000 topical and personal entries are included, but many are omitted. In sports, for example, only basketball is mentioned; Bamberg as a theme in literature is neglected (Goethe's "Götz von Berlichingen", E.T.A. Hoffmann's "Die Elixiere des Teufels", for example). Surprisingly, some names (Veit Stoss, E.T.A. Hoffmann) are entered under first names rather than family names. Summary articles that might have helped place the individual entries in a systematic context are lacking. The bibliography is a subjective listing with only 36 titles. Nevertheless, this lexicon offers a good, appealingly illustrated approach to topics relating to Bamberg for the tourist or local admirer. [hb/vh]

The preliminary work for this bibliography on Brandenburg, a region of eastern Germany that belonged to Prussia and, later, to the German Democratic Republic, began almost 40 years ago. The first part was published in 1970, and the work continued intermittently until 1990, when the "Forschungsstelle für Brandenburgische Landesgeschichte" [Research Center for the History of Brandenburg] was founded and plans were laid for the completion of the bibliography. The selection (including over 30,000 titles) is traditional, with the historical aspect in the foreground. The intent is to serve research in regional and local history. The area covered is the former province of Brandenburg with the boundaries of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the Niederlausitz is excluded, and the Altmark (since 1815 no longer a part of the Mark Brandenburg) is covered in a separate volume (Part 5). The bibliography includes primarily literature which appeared before 1970 on political, social, economic and cultural history of the area. Geographical aspects are dealt with in a limited way. Topographical maps through the second half of the nineteenth century are thoroughly covered, however, as are local daily and weekly newspapers. The indexes to personal names and place names are thoroughly and clearly done; a seventh volume with a subject index is expected to complete the work. [sah/vh]

This volume adds to and updates the main volume of this lexicon on the city of Braunschweig (Brunswick) which appeared in 1992 (RREO 95-2-283). Updated articles are marked accordingly, and only the additional information is included. According to the preface, there are 450 new articles; a large portion of them are biographical. With volume 12, which covers the eastern German regions of Mecklenburg and Pommerania, the last volume of this well-known handbook has appeared. Unlike the 1995 Berlin und Brandenburg volume (RREO 95-3-473), this is not a new edition but an entirely new work. It is arranged in the usual manner, with a historical introduction, articles about individual historical sites (cities, villages, castles, cloisters, etc.) organized alphabetically, and additional helpful appendixes such as genealogical tables, a bibliography, and a (rather incomplete) glossary of historical and legal-historical terms. This volume, like earlier volumes in the set, is a practical reference work for historians, tourists, and local history buffs. As in earlier volumes, however, the twentieth century is neglected. In the article on Rostock, for example, the period after 1945 is treated in only fourteen lines of a ten-page article. That history moves on should be recognized by the editors of the Handbuch.
