Isländische Literatur in deutscher Übersetzung: 1860–2000: eine Bibliographie [Icelandic Literature in German Translation, 1860–2000: A Bibliography]. Ed. Christine Knüppel. Köln: Seltmann & Hein, 2002. 174 p. ill. 23 cm. ISBN 3-934687-07-5: EUR 12.50 [03-1-016]

This volume replaces a slender catalog that first appeared in 1990 in conjunction with an exhibit in the Württemberg State Library. Expanded and with portraits of most of the authors, it lists translations published from 1860 to 2000 of New Icelandic Literature into German (many via Danish or Swedish). Of the 628 titles, 537 make up the monograph section, which is alphabetized by first name, according to Icelandic tradition. Collected works are divided into poems and stories (67 titles) and fairy tales and sagas (24 titles). Unfortunately, there is no indication of availability. The four indexes list authors; translators, publishers, and other persons; original titles; and translated titles. The short section (only three pages) on secondary literature consists primarily of reference works, including translation bibliographies in several languages.

Icelandic literature is not a big seller in the German book market, but new translations continue to appear, such as Karl-Ludwig Wetzig’s translation of the novel 101 Reykjavík by Hallgrímur Helgason (Stuttgart, 2000). Its imprint date puts it outside the scope of this bibliography. [sh/mm]
