Die Publikationen 1846 bis 2000: Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig [Publications,1846-2000, of the Saxon Academy of Sciences, Leipzig]. Ed. Michael Hübner. Stuttgart; Leipzig: Hirzel, 2000. 210 p. 25 cm. + supplement (7 p.) ISBN 3-8887-1080-1: EUR 30.20 [06-1-012]
This new bibliography of Saxon Academy publications replaces several earlier compilations. The bulk of the coverage is of papers presented at Academy sessions and subsequently published; they are arranged by section (philology/history, mathematics/ natural-science, technology/engineering) and indexed by first-named author. Other classes of listed publications include yearbooks (without content description), the six festschrifts (the contents of which appear in separately published supplements), research papers on names and local history (German and Slavic) in the region, research resources on Saxon history, five publication indexes, five monographs, and thirteen plans for future research. These plans are of special interest for their previews of mathematical and etymological research projects. (The Academy has a special interest in dialect research for the former East Germany.) Cost concerns make further updates of the Academy’s publication data more likely to appear on line than in print, at least for the foreseeable future. [sh/gw]
Die Mitglieder von 1846 bis 2006: Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig [Members, 1846-2006, of the Saxon Academy of Sciences, Leipzig]. Gerald Wiemers and Eberhard Fischer. 2d expanded and rev. ed. Berlin: Akademie-Verlag, 2006. 272 p. ill. 25 cm. ISBN 978-3-05-004276-3, 3-05-004276-1: EUR 39.80 [06-1-013]
The 1999 first edition appeared under the title Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig: Mitglieder 1846-1996 (see IFB 99-B09-591). It may be seen as excessive that the smallest and youngest of the 18th-century German “academies of learning” should be bringing out a new edition of its membership register barely a decade after its initial publication on the occasion of its 150th anniversary; after all, this is an area of publication known for its leisurely pace and lagging currency. But the establishment of a third section of members (technology/engineering, joining the original philology/ history and mathematics/natural-science sections) in the sesquicentennial year 1996 prompted both an expansion and a rearrangement (as some previously admitted members moved to the new section). The biographical profiles are arranged by section, with profiles of the thirteen honorary members preceding the sections. A foreword offers a short history of the Academy and lists of its presidents, officers, Nobel laureates and members of the Jablonowski Society, which was founded in 1769 for the advancement of German-Polish scholarly and cultural relations.
