Mythenrezeption: die antike Mythologie in Literatur, Musik und Kunst von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart [The Reception of Myths: Ancient Mythology in Literature, Music and Art from Earliest Times to the Present]. Ed. Maria Moog-Grünewald. Stuttgart: Metzler, 2008. ix, 749 p. ill. 25 cm. (Der neue Pauly. Supplemente, 5). ISBN 978-3-476-02032-1: EUR 179.95 [08-1/2-268]

While information on mythological figures naturally may be found in the main volumes of Der neue Pauly (see IFB 07-2-442 through 554 for other works on ancient mythologies), the current Supplement title focuses on a smaller group of 75 figures from the perspective of their “after-life” within the arts. Part 1 establishes the authoritative forms of the mythical names and their geographic and historical variants, together with citations to the sources; the much lengthier Part 2 focuses on their reception and is organized by epochs. Each article concludes with references to related figures, followed by relevant research literature and cited sources. In this otherwise so informative work one wishes for fuller information on the contributors themselves as well, instead of only their listing by name, location, and article title(s). An appendix provides a selective bibliography, list of abbreviations, early sources, source editions, a detailed list of illustrations, and indexes of mythical figures and of other persons (mainly writers and artists who took up the themes).
