This excellent bio-bibliographic reference book is based on a survey of "more than 1600" living linguists who write in German or work in the area of German linguistics, including non-academics who have published at least two books. Entries provide name, address, e-mail address, photograph, education, professional career, associations, organizational activities, subject and language specialization, and a list of publications, including all monographs and edited works, up to 25 articles, edited series or journals, translations, and festschrifts. Indexed by country, place, institution, language and subject specializations. [sh/ab]

This bio-bibliographic reference work, a companion to Wilhelm Zeil's Slawistik in Deutschland (Köln: Böhlau, 1994), includes philologists, historians, philosophers, translators, journalists, and authors from the sixteenth century to 1945. Although indispensable for libraries, archives and institutes in various disciplines, the selection of subjects has some inconsistencies and betrays a one-sided, Russo-centric concept of Slavic studies.
