The title of this directory is misleading, for it covers Asian countries only east of Pakistan, but also deals with the South Pacific area. Section 1 lists 110 research institutes; section 2, 60 libraries; and section 3, 31 archives. The publication reflects the situation pertaining in 1990. Each section is numbered separately, which necessitates three separate sequences of indexes. An appendix covering 36 research institutes and 11 libraries and archives in the former GDR is not indexed at all. The details of each institution are similar to those in the companion volume for Africa, with which there is a large overlap. An up-to-date edition with a unified index is desirable.
