Comprehensive bibliographies of Arabic-Islamic culture are rare (Zenker's Bibliotheca orientalis, A. Miller's Orientalische Bibliographie, Pfanmueller's Handbuch der Islam-Literatur, and the more recent Index Islamicus founded by James D. Pearson are welcome exceptions). This bibliography begins with one strike against it, namely that titles are restricted to German-language materials, omitting everything else. Much better would have been to publish in sections organized around subject matter. Another flaw appears to be the attempt to trace the contributions of individual scholars, but only through their German-language publications. Also missing are contributions of 17th and 18th century orientalists, since these were written in Latin! The first ten volumes contain the bibliographies, with vols. 11-19 reserved for additions and indexes. Unfortunately, the literature cited is only partial, with the inclusion of periodical literature only when that is complete or frequently used. Still, the BDAI is a comprehensive, dependable, and useful aid for literary research in Islamic subjects--as long as the lacking bibliographies in non-German languages appear in the near future! The first volume of this German-language bibliography of literature about Japan covers the years 1477 to 1920 and appeared in 1990. In the forward, a promise was given to conclude the entire work in 6 volumes by the year 1996. But the second volume only appeared in 1993, and at this rate completion would require eighteen years (by the year 2008). The second volume, covering the years 1921 to 1950, is organized according to twenty rough subject areas that are not always adequate to the task. Some arbitrariness in the first volume as to location of materials has been overcome here, but other unresolved problems of format remain. Readers should prefer the Japan-Bibliographie from the Ifo-Bibliothek zur Wirtschaft Japans (IFB 94-3/4-528). [sh/ljr]
