This, the eighth volume of a work that was started in 1863, will also represent its completion. Unlike earlier volumes, which also carried entirely new articles, vol. 8 - which will appear in 30 fascicles, with 5 fascicles bound together per part - will only update and conclude entries from earlier volumes. This will include approximately 7,000 scientists. The cut-off date for coverage has not been announced. With the demise of the GDR and its labor- intensive editorial and publishing practices, the Poggendorff is cutting back on production costs, resulting in a less user-friendly apparatus. One hopes for speedier publication of the remaining fascicles, but skepticism is in order here. [sh/sl]

Lists in alphabetical order the abbreviations for the serials covered in Vol. 7, b, including full title, place(s) of publication, and, for each title, up to two holding libraries (using non-standard codes). In establishing locations, it seems that the editors did not use the Zeitschriften Datenbank (ZDB), the German union list of serials: not a good sign. It is hard to give credence to the claim that this volume can be used as a reference work independent of Poggendorff. Instead, its greatest use is likely to be as a source for locating serials listed therein, and then only after consulting the ZBD. [sh/sl]
