Stamm's Leitfaden für Presse und Werbung, published since 1947, is firmly established as an informative and indispensable standard reference work on the press, advertising, the book trade and the library world. It covered Germany and the most important foreign publications. The section on Austria was relatively detailed, but in 1994 Stamm began publishing data for Austria in a separate volume. The result is a much larger number of entries, especially for magazines and periodicals. However, the Pressehandbuch [Press Handbook], issued by the Austrian press association, is still the directory of choice for Austria, since it is more detailed and undoubtedly more authoritative and current. The separate Stamm volume for Switzerland and Liechtenstein began publication in 1995. The number of entries, especially for periodicals, is much higher than in the earlier integrated version. There are several competing directories for Switzerland . At present the optimal choice would be Katalog der Schweizer Presse [Catalog of the Swiss Press] (1978-) together with Schweizer PR- und Medien-Verzeichnis [Swiss PR and Media Directory] (1973-), even though their combined price is higher than that of Stamm Schweiz.
