Partially continuing Estermann's Die deutschen Literatur-Zeitschriften 1815-1850 and 1850-1880, which represented a great improvement in bibliographic control of nineteenth-century periodicals, this publication has limited itself to twenty titles deemed characteristic and important within a particular cultural context or for a type of periodical in the years 1815-1880. The index devoted to each title is preceded by a bibliographic description that includes publishing history, a list of all volumes and issues, and an analysis of editorial comments. Each index covers personal names (including abbreviations), geographic references, and 78 subject areas, for which even the shortest texts have been examined. Thanks to the diligence of Estermann and his collaborators, an abundance of information has been made easily accessible for the first time. One questions, however, why the material, which was extracted from a database, was not made available on a CD-ROM in order to save space, cost, and researchers' time. [sh/nb]

The product of a research project at the University of Klagenfurt, this index covers 53 periodicals and anthologies dealing with Expressionism in Austria, which has not been the subject of as much scholarly investigation as its German counterpart. Twelve of the longer-lived titles included here were also covered by Paul Raabe's pioneering Index Expressionismus (Kraus, 1972). Most of the others were more ephemeral. The work's emphasis is on those published during the period 1917-1921. Volume one contains thorough information on each of the titles, including dates of publication, subtitle, editors, names and locations of publishers and printers, physical details, reprints, two holding libraries and their call numbers, references to scholarly investigations, and a comprehensive portrait of the periodical or anthology. The second volume consists of indexes covering persons; subjects; publishing companies; titles of reviewed, preprinted, and reprinted works; and titles of periodical articles. This publication represents a major step toward opening new avenues of research in the study of Austrian Expressionism. It is acceptable in printed form, due to the limited scope of the material, but a presentation in electronic format would have been preferable. [sh/nb]

These volumes offer a good starting point for research into the history of German language and literature instruction, as well as into the interrelationships between university and secondary school activity in this field. It is likely that they will also be used as sources for investigations into the reception of literary works, and in this sense are similar to the indexes reviewed above. Unlike these, however, included here are a number of periodicals for which indexes already exist. For periodicals of the post-war years, relevant information on individual authors may also be located in the excellent Quellenlexikon zur deutschen Literaturgeschichte by Heiner Schmidt (reviewed in RREO 94-3/4-438).
