Guide international de la recherche en histoire de l'éducation = International Guide for Research in the History of Education. International Standing Conference for the History of Education. Directed by Pierre Caspard. 2d ed. Paris: Institut National de Recherche Pédagogique; Bern: Lang, 1995. 275 p. 22 cm. ISBN 2-7342-0460-6 (Institut . . .): FF 90.00; ISBN 3-906754-27-8: SFr 23.00, DM 29.00

In 31 country-specific chapters, a chapter on international organizations related to the history of education, a bibliography, and a name index, this work gives extensive but outdated information on associations and research centers, university departments, libraries and document centers, databases, and reference works related to the history of education. The guide is mostly in English and French, though the information on Germany is in German. Conspicuously outdated--some of the databases and journals listed have been discontinued, while newer ones are omitted--this work will be of interest only to researchers and special libraries focusing on the history of education. Bibliographie Bildungsgeschichte [Bibliography on the History of Education]. Ed. Deutsches Institut für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung, Bibliothek für Bildungsgeschichtliche Forschung. Baltmannsweiler: Schneider-Verlag Hohengehren

1994-95 (1996). 368 p. 23 cm + 1 3.5" diskette. ISBN 3-87116-780-0: DM 75.00

A bibliography of works in educational history published in the German-speaking countries during 1994 and 1995, with emphasis on 1994 publications. Produced by the Bibliothek für Bildungsgeschichtliche Forschung in Berlin (BBF) (Library for Research in the History of Education), in cooperation with special libraries in Marburg, Vienna, and Zurich, the work is comprised of a main section, listing 1692 titles alphabetically by author, and indexes. Although its focus is not limited geographically, its sources are overwhelmingly from German-speaking countries: in the list of 232 journals, all but a handful are from Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Spot-checks showed major omissions. A significant number of theoretical and bibliographical works, including some core journals, are covered only partially or not at all. The work seems therefore to reflect only the holdings of the participating institutions, although this is nowhere stated. In addition, the poor organization and limited and cumbersome search options, even on the accompanying database disk, render it inadequate for historical researchers. This is certainly not a satisfactory substitute for the international bibliography ("Index bibliographicus") that used to appear in the Paedagogica historica (though not when the journal resumed publication in 1990 after a 5-year hiatus). It does contain, however, unique coverage of about 20-30% of the BBF's holdings which are not included on the CD-ROM Literaturdokumentation Bildung (cf. RREA 1, 440, and RREO 95-2-237). A revision of this work, with more comprehensive coverage and improved indexing, would be a valuable and welcome specialized bibliography. [sh/mm]
